I have read this morning that Mr. Clarke the Home Office Minister is now proposing a presumption of deportation for foreign citizens who commit crimes in the UK. I find this pandering to the xenophobic lobby a petty attempt to save his position by suddenly being "tougher" on foreigners than the xenophobes.
I have reservations about the mandatory deportation of some criminals. If a paedophile is released on licence in the UK he is subjected to a regime of control and supervision intended to prevent his re-offending. The UK has the capacity to deliver such supervision and protection. If a man is deported back to any other country that is unable to provide such supervision we are basically ensuring that local children in that country will be abused, as the re-offending rate among unsupervised paedophiles is so high. Therefore such deportations are morally and ethically suspect and I do not want paedophiles dumped back into their country of origin without the proper supervision necessary to mitigate their re-offending. I think in contemplating such a thoughtless action the Home Secretary is bordering on criminal negligence. Furthermore he is demonstrating just how out of control the Home Office currently is, as it rushes from one folly to another driven by the irrational raging of the mob.
Is it possible that under British laws regarding extra-territorial jurisdiction over sex offences committed abroad that Charles Clarke or any subsequent Home Secretary could find themselves being prosecuted as an accessory to such a paedophile crime, a crime that will be the predictable and direct consequence of this new policy?
